Nation-wide “Student’s Report” on non-NET fellowship issue

A Jawaharlal Nehru University-based students’ organisation is conducting a nation-wide campaign to take student’s feedback on the non-NET fellowship issue.
The organisation working in solidarity with the “Occupy UGC” movement aims to find out if students agree with the idea of giving non-NET fellowships on the basis of merit and financial status.
The feedback, or the “Student’s Report” as they are calling it, will be prepared in two ways. Feedback will be taken in physical form from students at JNU and online from students of other Central universities across the country. The result will then be taken to the Ministry of Human Resource Development for further action.
“In an environment where there is a systematic exclusion of the voices of the students, we are calling for the preparation of a parallel ‘Students Report’ on the issue of these fellowships,” said former JNUSU president Lenin Kumar.
“In preparing this parallel report, we are going to undertake a campus wide survey over the next few days which will take into account the importance of fellowships in pursuing research degrees. While starting out in JNU, we also wish to take this survey across campuses and through online platforms,” he added.
Some of the questions included in the feedback form are: would you be able to do the MPhil/PhD courses without any fellowship?; would you look for a job to support yourself/family while doing MPhil/PhD in absence of a fellowship?; do you think the present non-NET fellowship scheme (Rs.5,000 for MPhil and Rs.8,000 for PhD) is a support sufficient for completion of MPhil/PhD?.
Students will also be asked about what they support — is it the non-NET fellowship to each student pursing MPhil/PhD in any university or non-NET fellowship given to selective students based on an economic or merit-based criterion.
