Virtual police station for public

A Virtual Police Station (VPS) is being launched in the Capital to make functioning of a police station comprehensible for the public.

The VPS is a first-of-its kind training tool to acquaint the public with the functioning of a police station through the click of a mouse.

The facility will come to people’s aid if they want to understand how an FIR is filed and how a police station works, without visiting it physically. The international NGO Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative (CHRI) has developed the VPS.

It allows the police and public to enter every room of a computerised police station to explore and learn the key procedures such as arrest, registration of complaints of sexual assault, registration of FIRs and more.

The application will be launched on Tuesday.

“VPS is a step towards humanising the functioning of the police as it is important to demystify the police station by exposing citizens to the layers of work – management, administration, investigation, going to court, forensics — that the personnel in the police station perform,” Maja Daruwala, Director, CHRI told reporters.

Explaining about the functioning of the training tool, Vivek Trivedi, CHRI said: “In the VPS, clicking on various icons of the members of police and public, or objects such as registers and phones, prompts a video and text box to open, that explains these key procedures.”
