No smog cover over IGIA this Diwali

Bursting crackers on Diwali evening usually leads to a thick cover of smog that envelopes Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) for days at times, but this year was different.
On Wednesday night a layer of smog did cover the airport, but unlike previous years it didn’t affect visibility severly.
“The impact of Diwali smog at IGIA was less in intensity and also in duration this year. Normally, visibility at IGIA on most Diwali nights falls below 500 metres but on Wednesday, visibility remained at 700 metres even when it hit its lowest,” said RK Jenamani, director-in-charge, IGIA met unit.
“It was observed that after remaining at a minimum of 700 metre for few hours, in the latter part of next day the smog cleared up and visibility reached up to 1,500 to 2,500 metres between 10 am and 5.30 pm on Thursday,” he said.
Mr. Jenamani added that usually a smog cover remains at the airport for three to four days after Diwali, but this year the smog cleared up the next day.
“This is something that has been hardly observed before at IGIA in terms of visibility,” he said.
“The reason behind this was also the presence of good winds of five to 15 kmph speed, which persisted overnight with support from high vertical mixing of air that was continuously helping in dispersing all fresh smog that could have been added from city and other areas,” he said.
