British financial aid to propel Pune’s ‘smart city’ dream

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United Kingdom has ushered in hope for Pune’s dream of becoming a smart city with Mr. Modi’s counterpart David Cameron announcing British technical and financial aid to develop Pune, Amravati and Indore.
During his meeting with Mr. Modi, Mr. Cameron said U.K. would enter into a five-year partnership to develop these cities.
“We want British companies, with their world-class consulting, project management and engineering skills, to help you plan, design and build these new cities. So I am delighted we’ve agreed upon a new five-year partnership to develop Pune, Amravati, and Indore,” said Mr. Cameron in a joint statement.
Mr. Cameron’s speech also mentions the establishment of new ‘Centres of Excellence’ in key sectors, commencing with a centre for Automotive and Advanced Engineering in Pune, which constitutes a third of the country’s automotive industry.
Commenting on Mr. Cameron’s announcement, Pune Municipal Corporation Commissioner Kunal Kumar said he expected close collaboration on issues with visits from experts in the U.K. in the town planning, transport and environmental sectors.
