Though students of the Film & Television Institute of India here have called off their 139-day strike in protest against the appointment of Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the institute, discontent among them has prevented the reconstituted FTII Society from assuming office until December.
Sources said the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Ministry was wary of student protests during the prestigious International Film Festival of India (IFFI) to be held in Goa from November 20 to 30.
The students have announced that films documenting their epic protest will be screened at the IFFI. The films include FTII Strike and FTII Mahabharat , which trace the strike from its inception and contrast Mr. Chauhan with his more famous predecessors. The students are expected to engage film-makers of national and international repute to rally support for their cause.
After the strike — the longest in the history of the institution since its inception in 1961 — ended in October, the students returned to their classes, but vowed to continue the agitation in a “democratic way”.
Last week, the Ministry announced the nomination of actor Satish Shah, film critic Bhawana Somaiyaa and producer B.P. Singh to the FTII Council in lieu of directors Santosh Sivan and Jahnu Barua and actor Pallavi Joshi, who has resigned in an expression of solidarity with the students.
