On the directions from the Prime Minister's Office, defence officials have asked the district administration to suggest some spots in the city where the Vijayanta battle tanks could be displayed. Vijayanta is the name of the first indigenous tank of the Indian Army. Its prototype was completed in 1963 and the tank entered service in 1965. Since then, 2,200 tanks served the Army until they were retired in 2008. It had been the main battle tank of the Indian Army and played an important role during the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

Land in west UP is not only fertile for producing grains but also for producing soldiers. During a recent recruitment to UP police, the highest number of youths got selected from Meerut division. Not just the police service, other armed services, including the Army, also attract the youth from here. "Uniformed services are still the first choice of the youths here. Keeping this in mind, the defence official thought it prudent to place these battle armours in the city," said district magistrate (DM) Pankaj Yadav.

"When we were asked to give some names of spots where these tanks could be placed, we told them about one or two corners of the DM residence - one at Ambedkar Chowk side and the other at Mawana Adda side. Now, they have asked for two more spots where the Army can display tanks. We will identify some suitable spots within a couple of days and inform the 9th Infantry Division about the locations," Yadav said.
