Slouching tigers beware, laptop has hidden danger

Using a laptop on the lap may be cool but is not healthy. Doctors say these are the primary cause of lower back and neck pain among the youth, particularly students and professionals who spend a lot of time working on them.

"Unlike desktops, the laptops have both the keyboard and the monitor attached to each other. You have to slouch to use it while sitting on bed. Many people keep it on the lap but even that causes lower back pain," said Dr H S Chhabra, chief of spine service and medical director at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre (ISIC).

He said nearly 15% of total patients visiting the OPDs at their centre are youngsters with a history of chronic pain in the lower back and neck—traditionally associated with poor posture.
